Ethiopia is located north of Sudan and Kenya. In New Testament times Ethiopia was ruled by a queen whose name or title was Candace (Acts 8:27). Many of us remember the story of the Ethiopian Eunuch, Candace's treasurer, in Acts 8:26-39. Phillip was sent by the Holy Spirit to help him understand Scripture. With the words of Isaiah 53, Phillip led the African to faith in Christ. The Eunuch asked to be baptized and went on his way rejoicing.

St Peter Lutheran Church and Pastor Kassa are partnering in this new mission to establish an Ethiopian Lutheran presence in the Northwest suburban area. Plans include holding regular worship services conducted in the Ethiopian language at St. Peter's Historic Chapel. German-speaking Lutherans who immigrated from the Schaumburg-Lippe area of Germany built the historic Chapel in 1863. Now it will be used by Ethiopian Lutherans to hear the same Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Eva's Graduation - Telegu - Asian, Indian

We take opportunity to invite people to attend our occasions to hear the Word of God and fishing them to come to our worship services. Eva, Pastor Katari's daughter was graduated from Concordia University-Chicago in the month of May 2008 and we invited our friends and church members to attend. Pastor Bacon gave the message to our Indian people how to use our American freedom for the better for their future. Eva is very helpful in the ministry of God to work with Pastor Katari and the Church elders. May the Lord bless Eva to be success in her future life.

New Members: Bethesda Telugu Church always invites new visitors to worship and participate in our Church activities. Mrs. & Mr. Prasad came from India two years ago to study in the USA. Recently they started to come to our church and now they want to become members of this church. Pastor Katari invited them to church worship on March 28, 2007. And this new family invited all our church members for a prayer meeting in their home on the celebration of their son Prince who is six years old. Mrs. Prasad studied law and is looking for a job. So we pray with them and we hope our good Lord will bless them and fulfill all their needs.

Witness: Mr. Mohan Rao, who came from a Hindu family witnessed and confessed his faith in Lord Jesus Christ on March 21, 2007 at Bethesda. He said, "Before I applied for a visa I went to a church at my town in India, and prayed to Jesus and told him my financial problems. So within 10 days I got visa. Soon after I came here I attended Telugu worship at Bethesda, and Pastor Katari and other church members helped me to find a job and palace to live. Now I am free from my financial burdens and Jesus gave peace to me and to my family. I will worship Jesus as long as I live." He went to Florida to stay with his relatives and from there he wants to go back to India. We continue to pray for him and for his family to stay in the faith of Jesus and take baptism with his family. He was with our church for more than three years.

Through the work of Hicham Chehab, in partnership with the Northern Illinois District LCMS and in cooperation with Trinity Lutheran Church, Roselle, Illinois, the International Ministry of PEOPLE OF THE BOOK LUTHERAN OUTREACH (POBLO) is going forward in the Chicagoland area.

In November, 2006, Hicham was established as the new POBLO-Chicago on-site missionary. Hicham immediately began work with a number of international families, meeting one-on-one with them. God continues to provide opportunities for ministry in the Chicago area. The need for immigration and refugee services grows; food, housing, job placement and clothing requests increase. More importantly, the work of sharing the love of Jesus Christ with people who have not heard the saving message is paramount in the work of POBLO-Chicago.

A Sunni Iraqi is Baptized - POBLO - Chicago

Fifty-year-old Hussein described his dream to me:

I was lost on a bleak and treacherous road, trying in vain to find my way home, when a person in white robes appeared on my path.

"Who are you?" I asked. "I am Jesus Christ," He replied. Then, being aware of my apprehension, Jesus added, "Not Satan. Satan cannot take on my image."

"'I want to go back home. Can you show me the way?" I asked.

"I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life." Jesus replied.

While I was walking, He was floating in the air. There was a lot of chaos around us, like a wasteland. Jesus held my hand and took me into a church. Inside was a big pit with boiling water that was foaming and seething. Pointing to the boiling water, Jesus said, "Those are your sins coming up. Water will cleanse you of your sins." Then Jesus added: "I will send you like a sheep among wolves."

That was the dream Hussein, an Iraqi Sunni refugee, had seen before my meeting him in Wheaton, IL.

I was bringing Hussein, with his family and others, to an ESL class. I parked at the church and the women stepped out of my van to join the class. However, Hussein, sitting in the front seat without getting out, asked to talk to me in private.

I took Hussein to my home, feeling that there was something spiritual in his request. This is when Hussein narrated his dream to me. I responded by opening an Arabic version of the Bible, contextualized for Muslims, and reading parts of the Gospel of John to him. Then I read Acts 8 to him.

Hussein responded by asking to be baptized.

Hamid, 33, born in a Sabian community in Iran, went a few times to a church in Vienna, Austria. He admired the architecture and the culture but no one told him about the love of Christ. Hamid arrived in the U.S. with his mother one month before I met him in Wheaton. In Iran, Hamid was a successful business man, a well-traveled person. He was surrounded, all the time, by family and friends who enjoyed his generosity.

More than a year ago, Farhad, 25, born in a Sabian community in Iran, went a few times to a church that was recognized by the Islamic Republic, in order to explore Christianity. But he had no Christian instruction. It was the death of his beloved sister, Iman, that brought Farhad to his knees.

NID LWML CROSS CULTURE OPEN FORUM - LWM Cross Cultural

NID LWML CROSS CULTURE OPEN FORUM
Faith, love, sharing and service are common denominators of our Christian faith. Our Christian faith enables us to engage in relationships within the church. A relationship equals communication and a sharing of common interests.

Some of our Christian brothers and sisters visiting or attending a church have been made to feel unwelcome. It seems strange that in a place of Christian love, a person would experience not a word of greeting, a frown or a sense of being isolated in the pew, because no one will sit by you. Loneliness and isolation do not create a foundation for relationship building.

Be reversing the situation, and finding yourself in a new congregation with no one
greeting you at your arrival or perhaps being frowned at for sitting in a pew that
someone sat in for at least twenty years, or you found yourself sitting alone;
you would feel unwelcome, isolated and discomfort would gradually begin to engulf your entire being. I think you could say that there would be no chance of your returning to that "unwelcoming" church.

Frequently, people of a different race or ethnic background feel unwelcome and perhaps even ostracized.

Child rearing begins at home and Christianity begins at church on Sunday and it proceeds out of the church doors and into the neighborhood everyday of the week. There is no escaping faith in action. It encompasses you and YOU feel Christian love radiate as you feel the warmth of the sun on a sunny day.

On Saturday, September 13, at St. Paul Lutheran Church, 1025 Lake Street,
Melrose Park at 1:30 P.M. the ladies of LWML led by Mrs. Dorcas Meissner will
have an open forum or discussion of racial and multi cultural issues. Women from the nearby community will be also be invited.

We will open the discussion to engage in any troubling issues of race or ethnicity
and how we as Christian sisters, can worship and live in peace and harmony.

How far are you willing to go in your Christian faith? Are you willing to reach out
and get to know someone who is a stranger to you?

The Cross Cultural Ministry committee is inviting and encouraging you to attend this all important first step in building a Christian relationship. Husbands or friends are also invited.

Ruth Pralle will lead a choral group for this activity. Please let Ruth know if you wish to participate. Ruth's number is 847-255-1713.

FRIENDS INTO SERVING HIM - LWM Cross Cultural

"FRIENDS INTO SERVING HIM"

The teenage years can be considered the fun times of the youthful experience. There
are new friends to meet, the excitement of attending or participating in athletic events,
the high school dances, the junior prom and the biggest event of all, the senior prom and
of course, graduation and then more schooling or stepping into the adult world and
finding employment.

The teen years can also be times of indecision, whether to go to college or not,
what college or university to attend, the major to be chosen that will be the basis
for future employment, college entrance exams, passing or failing the exams,
and what college or university accepts the applicant and finally the whole dating experience scene.

A quick exam of the teenager's church experience is Sunday School lessons, the
excitement of VBS and then confirmation. What comes next, for the teenager at
church? There are few opportunities for youthful participation. There maybe a
teenage Bible study, a youth group, a teenage choir or there may be none of these
activities.

The teenager, being somewhere between the Sunday School student and adult member,
feels that she is in limbo and feels left out with little or no opportunity to partake
in the decision making process of the church. Confirmation then becomesgraduation
and the teenage having a need to express herself and to keep active, plus having the
opportunity to form relationships with her peers seeks opportunities outside of the
church. Today's teenager is tomorrow's church member and church leader.

LWML, devoted to mission work, has been a vital force in the church for nearly
65 years. The women of LWML, having a lot of experience in mentoring younger
women, are offering teenage girls from 13 to 18 years of age an opportunity to
reaffirm their relationship with God, assisting them to use their spiritual gifts, while
enjoying the fellowship of their peers.

"Friends Into Serving Him", as the new ministry is called, is available for junior high
and high school girls. "Friends" can assume a very flexible pattern, meetings can be
weekly, monthly or quarterly and can be led by officers, or those having a leadership
position and the group can be affiliated with a church or a school. If a congregation's
number of youth is somewhat limited, then several youth groups can be combined.

While forming relationships between peers and achieving experience in leadership roles, gaining spiritual insight and growth, there are opportunities to serve the Lord by
participating in servant events, collecting mites, operating a Sunday School gift shop,
organizing a father-daughter dance to raise funds for a mission project and assist
LWML societies with their activities.

As the teen grows spiritually and participates in mission opportunities with her peers,
she will learn leadership skills and as she is now making a contribution to her
Lord and congregation, she will grow into her role as an active adult within
the congregation.

Resources are available from the "Lutheran Women's Quarterly" and LWML
catalog. There are 28 Journal Gems devoted to topics of concern to today's
youth, 28 Jean Gems devotional books as well as resources for organizing
and all other aspects of "Friends Into Serving Him" Bible studies and gift
items are available from the "Lutheran Women's Quarterly".

"Friends Into Serving Him" encourages spiritual growth, leadership training,
mission service, witnessing, Christian fellowship with peers and relationship
building.

We are given many gifts from God. Don't keep these gifts wrapped up and put
on a shelf for safe keeping. Open the gifts and watch them grow and develop as
God intended.

For further details or how to organize "Friends Into Serving Him", contact
Pauline Brunke at 630-393-6380.
